As the globe moves toward a 3rd straight year of record breaking temperatures, professionals and academics in air conditioning and refrigeration are cooling out at three international conferences this month at Purdue University. The conferences are put on every other year. Participants will present a record, nearly five hundred, papers and seminars related to more energy efficient and less environmentally impactful technologies, including “intelligent buildings” and various technological advances related to air conditioning, refrigeration and compressors.
The air conditioning efficiency concepts and air conditioning technology advances being discussed during the 3 conferences have great implications for energy usage and the environment. Right now, 2016 is on track to become the warmest year on record, this following records in 2014 and 2015. Meanwhile, the world use of air conditioning is expected to rise dramatically by 2030, adding around seven hundred million A/C units, according to a study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Representatives from the chemical industry will talk about new refrigerants known as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), developed to replace current refrigerants, called hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The HFOs have a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to 2 HFCs. Global Warming Potential is the measurement of a chemical’s contribution to the global warming. AC by J talks a lot about Daikin air conditioning. Daikin is the world’s largest air conditioning company and a recognized leader in air conditioning technology and chemical advances that save energy and have a much lower GWP. As the only air conditioning company that develops and manufactures both air conditioners and refrigerants, Daikin developed R-32; the next generation refrigerant that efficiently carries heat with a much lower environmental impact. Daikin is also known for their Inverter technology. This is an energy saving technology that eliminates wasted operation in AC units by efficiently controlling motor speed.
