Do Closed Doors Reduce Cooling Costs?

Posted on: September 5, 2017

Close a couple of doors and reduce the amount of space your air conditioner has to cool. It’s a simple enough idea and at first blush it seems sound enough. But is that how it really works? Will closing doors actually translate to lower cooling costs and a more comfortable home? Find out more as the specialists at AC by J tackle this common misconception!

What Closing Doors Actually Does to Your Home Cooling

Okay so we gave the answer away there, didn’t we? Unfortunately while the theory feels like a decent fix that will give your efficiency a boost, it actually does the exact opposite. Closing doors and or air vents will in fact increase your cooling costs. How so? The problem lies with two big things: one is the square footage your air conditioner was designed to work with, and the other is how closing off unvented areas increases air pressure.

When an air conditioner is installed it is sized and chosen in order to move air in specific amounts and to fill specific amounts of space. Interruptions to this, say by closing a door, will restrict air flow. And in the world of HVAC restricting air flow is always bad. To put it simply this chokes the air conditioner, reducing its efficacy and even potentially causing premature breakdowns.

Additionally when a door is closed and air can no longer flow freely it pressurizes the room but does not create a perfect seal, meaning that pressurized air will certainly escape and mess up air pressure in the home. This results in reverse flow in your ducts, and can even lead to air being forcefully drawn into your home from outdoors, meaning your air conditioner now has to work even harder to keep up.

Things That Can Go Wrong

Closing doors in your home may seem harmless, but in fact it can cause a lot of problems:

  • Significant increases in cooling costs
  • Frost and ice forming in the cooling unit (a common result of fluctuations in air pressure)
  • Air flow restrictions that lead to AC problems and possibly AC repair
  • Warmer air and hot spots in rooms
